Artist Statment
My art practice is driven by curiosity about perception, light, and transformation. I’m fascinated by how ordinary objects can shift in meaning and beauty through the presence of light or its absence. Recently, my work has turned toward beauty’s impermanence, death, decay, rot, and rebirth. These themes allow me to explore why we choose to freeze objects in time through the act of painting. They are also a reaction to how my views of society and the future have shifted as I’ve grown up.
My work is focused on detail and realism. I've been painting still lifes that isolate objects under controlled lighting like glass, water, and reflective surfaces. I capture how light refracts and bends. I also play with darkness in my work, inspired by the chiaroscuro of baroque art. This allows me to use light to carefully reveal the subject.
I take inspiration from the unrecognized beauty of everyday objects. My fascination leads me to set up references where an ordinary subject becomes visually complex when lit from the right angle.
